When it’s time to install a tilt trim motor, you’ll notice one green and one blue wire on most models. The blue wire carries power to raise the engine, and the green wire carries power to lower the engine. Motors built for older-style systems may also have a black wire that serves as a ground. Newer style systems do not have this third wire.

A: It adjusts the boat’s power and efficiency by flattening out once it clears the bow wave.

Q: How will I know if my trim is out too far?
A: You will notice the RPM’s will go up and the speed will come down.

Q: When do I trim the boat back in?
A: When your back is down at idle or in no wake zones or coming to a stop.

Q: Blue wire? Green wire? Black wire? What do they do?
A: The blue wire raises and the green wire lowers. Black wires are commonly found on older systems that don’t receive ground through the motor housing via an engine chassis ground. Just remember “Blue sky and Green grass”. Blue raises it to the sky, green drops it to the grass.

Q: If the PT&T motor works fine, but the engine will not rise or lower?
A: If the PT&T motor works fine, but the engine won’t rise or lower, leaks hydraulic fluid or settles down when in the raised position or won’t stay trimmed, chances are the problem is with the hydraulic pump or valve body.

Q: What are some indicators I need to service the PT&T system?

Lack of movement. If you can hear it running but moving very little.
Intermittent operation. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. If it becomes undependable and doesn’t work every time.
Slow, noisy, jerking action with grinding whining and just not smooth.
Stuck in one position or the other – either up or down.
